English Border Garden

A formal garden, long and rectangular in shape, the English Border Garden presents itself in an elegant and refined manner. A statue of the goddess Athena rises nobly in the center of a square bed at one end of the English Border. A brick path way encircles this work of art and runs along the edge of four symmetric peripheral beds. This part of the Border is planted with bulbs for spring and then with annuals for the summer. It is balanced and geometric with arborvitae hedge and uniformity.

The main portion of the English Border is composed of two almost parallel rectangular beds. A brick pathway runs along the edge of each bed and in between the paths is a central lawn area. The Border is planted with sweeps of plants that provide color all season long. There are patterns in the planting to provide balance and continuity.

In this Garden, look for lamb’s ears (Stachys byzantina), Russian sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia) and potentilla ‘Gibson’s Scarlet’ (Potentilla astrosanguinea) planted in sweeps along each side of the garden. There are also shrubs and one tree in the Garden to provide structure and winter interest. The English Border Garden is in bloom throughout the spring and summer.
