The Grass Garden highlights ornamental grasses as well plants that grow well in sandy, dry areas. Take notice of the different prickely pear cactus (Opuntia), (Yes - Cactus do grow in Ohio!) but don’t get too close. The spines of these plants are an effective defense. There are also a number of different sedum, hens and chicks (Sempervivum) and yucca plants in the dry beds.
The interest in this Garden begins in the summer when the grasses begin to flower and continues through the winter. The grasses are left standing until spring for winter interest as well as for animals and birds. There are a wide variety of grasses that are planted ranging from 12-15’ in height, Ravennae Grass (Erianthus ravennae) to less than 1’, Elijah’s Blue Fescue (Festuca glauca).
