Horticulture Internship

General Description:
Toledo Botanical Garden seeks interns currently enrolled in a university curriculum or a recent graduate in one or more of the following areas:  Horticulture, Landscape Gardening, Botany, Ecology or related field.  

International students are welcome to apply and would be sponsored through the Ohio State University International Exchange Program (http://top.osu.edu/).

*Able to operate gardening, mowing and utility equipment

Greenhouse Manager

General Description:
Full Time/Permanent/Salaried

This position is responsible for acquiring, propagating and caring for greenhouse and nursery crops for the plant sale and general use in the garden. The greenhouse manager also organizes and oversees plant sales on the grounds and assists with general horticultural work as needed.

Orders plant material for use on the grounds of the garden and for retail at TBG.
Propagates and grows perennials and annuals for use in the plant sales and on the grounds; includes disease and insect control both in the greenhouse and nursery areas. Woody plant propagation and growth will be involved to a lesser degree.
Plans and executes major plant sales to support garden operations; includes working well with volunteers and staff in the planning and implementation process.
Responsible for care, maintenance and disease/insect control for plants in greenhouse, quarantine and nursery areas. It is critical that the grower produce high quality plants for sale and use on the grounds.  Assuring week-end care of the greenhouse, nursery and quarantine areas is required.
Maintains Greenhouse systems including computerized climate control system.
Orders, grows and helps install the annual plantings on the garden grounds including containers and baskets.
Coordinates the production and distribution of Oak Openings Native plants.
Serve as primary contact to Agricultural Research Service/USDA for four greenhouse bays rented for research purposes.
Represent TBG to Maumee Valley Growers, a regional greenhouse consortium.
Makes suggestions for and help implement improvements in the facilities, procedures and services regarding propagation, maintenance and retail operations.
Supervises and works alongside greenhouse and horticulture volunteers.
Works major garden events including Plant Sale and Crosby Festival of the Arts.
Assists at special events as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
 
 

Minimum Qualifications:
Position requires a degree in horticulture or related field, two years relevant experience, including the identification and maintenance of a variety of plant materials.
Excellent and effective interpersonal and communication skills.
The ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
General maintenance and repair skills.
Must obtain and maintain an Ohio public operator’s license for greenhouse chemical application upon hiring.
Must possess a valid driver's license.

Horticulturist

General Description:
Summary:  This position will oversee the management of assigned garden areas of Toledo Botanical Garden.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Performs, coordinates and directs the work activities of interns, volunteers and staff in the planting and maintenance of ornamental flowers, trees and shrubs.
Transports workers and materials to and from the on-site work areas.
Assures quality and performance of work in progress or upon completion to assure compliance with instructions.
Performs and oversees work involved in grounds maintenance including mowing and trimming grass, raking leaves, irrigation, application of chemicals, removing snow and ice, and pruning all types of plant material as needed.
Works with horticulture staff to keep plant records up-to-date.
Recommends improvements and preventative maintenance programs and techniques.
Assist with installation and maintenance of irrigation systems.
Writes articles, teaches horticulture classes and television garden education spots as needed.
Provides information to the public on the gardens.
Assists with planning and design reviews of the horticulture collections.
Assists in the development of horticultural tours/decent training programs.
Assists at special events as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
 
Supervisory Responsibilities: Oversees and directs the work of the interns, seasonals and volunteers assigned to the gardens. 

Minimum Qualifications:
Qualifications:  This individual must posses a valid driver license. This position also requires the individual to obtain a public operator’s license for chemical application from the state of Ohio Department of Agriculture upon hiring.  This position requires a minimum of an Associates Degree in horticulture, floriculture or a closely related area and two years of responsible landscape experience, which included the identification and care of a variety of plant materials.

Environmental Educator

General Description:
Toledo Botanical Garden seeks a part time Environmental Educator to conduct environmental curricula to preschool through sixth grade students.

Minimum Qualifications:
This position requires experience working with school-age children, computer literacy, creativity and enthusiasm.  A Bachelors Degree is also required.
